Fern, Sensitive

Onoclea sensibilis
A 1-2’ rather coarse, once-cut fern. The somewhat leathery sterile leaves are long-triangular, widest at the base and tapering to the tip. The leaflets have wavy, often indented margins and the upper leaf axils are winged, connecting the upper leaflets. The fertile leaf is on a separate upright stalk and consists of a compact cluster of ascending leaflets bearing small spore case beads. The fertile leaf turns brown when mature. Prefers damp areas in shade or sun.
